Recently I received a submission which I thought was compelling enough to share. I love receiving submissions and requests for guest posts, but because I look for unique projects and instructions, this will only be the second guest post I’ve had on my blog! Shannon Kaye, who hosted DIY Network Channel’s “Fresh Coat” and is now launching a series of videos on DIY’s website, contacted me a few weeks ago, submitting her work to my blog. I was actually familiar with her work and had a picture of her chevron painted ceiling in one of my files:
Even though I LOVE the picture above, I know how grueling just painting a ceiling is, let alone doing a design, so I wanted to pick something that was a little more “doable” for everyone. (If you want instructions for the chevron ceiling, let me know.)
She redid her bathroom, pulling a pattern from her shower curtain and painting it sporadically on the wall, which can be done in other rooms as well. Here is her post:
Creating Custom Artwork with Tracing Paper and Paint

Whether I’m designing or painting, I like to make small connections between elements to give the room a pulled together look without being too matching or themed. Of course, either way, I think about how I’ll incorporate a paint project to add that extra, unexpected layer.
My own bathroom started out like this- ick.
The remodel was based on total functionality- I had the toilet and tub moved to create more storage…
Then decided on a simple theme, my floral painting collection, and an easy white and gray color scheme. I found a shower curtain with a graphic flower pattern that fit the look perfectly.
I grabbed my tracing paper and soft graphite pencil and drew flowers inspired by the shower curtain. When all the flowers looked just the way I liked them, I simply flipped the paper over, placed them on the wall, and traced the flowers into spontaneous clusters.
And once I liked the arrangement I painted the flowers with black, white, and gray latex paint.
I added a vintage brass sconce for the, um, ecoutrements… et voila!, my bathroom was complete.
I’ve used this transfer technique for years because I like being able to work my idea- just sketch, play, erase, perfect- and then transfer my plan to a surface for painting. Here are a few other projects I’ve created with this simple transfer technique…

From the latter pictures, you can see that patterns can be painted just about anywhere, even on furniture (!?!) to revitalize a space.
