While I work on my posts for how to make the carpet tiles and cornice boards, I thought I would dig into my files and show you some adorable, simple and inexpensive projects that I thought worthy of saving for future consideration.
Before flat screen TVs, many tried to hide their TVs in armoires. Now, those that bought flat screen TVs are trying to get rid of them!
I searched Craigslist while doing this post, just to see, and there were hundreds of armoires, many of them for free! Try to imagine them with a coat of paint, molding added to the top, different door knobs, added shelves, etc.
Here’s why:
Finding one this wide would require patience, but what child wouldn’t love a little nook like this?
Children adore hiding spots, so another option for an armoire, if you can find one with full length doors, is remove the back and place it in front of a door, so it’s a “secret” entrance, whether to a closet or a room.
This doesn’t even have to be for a child; if you want a “hidden door”, this is a good option without all the work! You could even hinge the back instead of removing it completely, so if it’s opened, it looks like a regular armoire. I just came up with this while writing this and now I want to do it!
You can add shelves for storage, or use it as an office/homework station with cork, peg or chalk boards attached to the inside of the doors.
How magical! White twinkle lights is a nice option too.
Here’s a medallion sold by Marie Ricci. You can also use an inexpensive medallion ($20 at Home Depot), paint it and glue on letters painted a shade lighter. Sometimes chandeliers like this can be a little pricey; don’t be afraid to go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a chandelier, spray primer on it, then paint it the exact color you want.
I bring this up because I’ve seen light fixtures with acanthus leaves just like this at these stores. You can also add the crystals as well by drilling small holes where you want to add them. Crystals come in all colors and shapes too.
Artwork doesn’t have to be store bought. I came across this picture, but you can dissect it and figure out how they made it. My guess is you would need 8 baseballs, 4 bats, some light plywood and trim.
- Cut the 8 baseballs in half.
- Cut the 4 bats in half length-wise
- Cut 2 bats in half in the middle.
- Paint half the bats white and the other half red.
- Cut a piece of plywood large enough for the bats and balls.
- Paint a blue rectangle at top large enough to accommodate 15 baseballs.
- Mount balls and bats by nailing them in from behind.
- Add trim to the outer edges.
So unique, perfect for a boy or maybe even a man cave. You could even do something like this with golf clubs and golf balls.
Little houses. Another idea for birds is to find a large branch, set in a pretty urn and put these colorful birds and ribbons on the branches.
Attach birdcages with interesting shapes that you have painted.
Use a paper punch on magazine pages or colorful paper for cutouts. Bend them for 3D effect and mount them with glue dots. Punches for dinosaurs, airplanes, etc. are all readily available.
This isn’t a DIY, but I wanted to show the effect of attaching things to the wall in different layouts. These flowers by Chiasso are made out of chrome and are priced at $22 for a set of 20.
Simple frames bought at a craft store are great for adding prints and pictures, many of which can be found online and printed on a color printer.
My favorite is framing my children’s art. I wait for sales at craft stores and buy frames, canvases and paint to display their art and for them to create new art.
Here’s another idea for displaying artwork for the artist that produces many masterpieces. By Clean and Scentible
A magnetic strip can be run along a wall – or (and I don’t have a picture for this, sorry!), you can paint a wall with magnetic primer!
A clothes line with clothes pins is a nice idea because you can attach bulkier projects as well. Photo by this vintage chica/flickr
A sofa can be made out of cushions with bolster pillows as the arms.
This isn’t what is done on the wall but it reminded me of another project. After Christmas is a good time to buy plastic deer. Sounds gruesome, but saw their little heads off, paint, hot glue them to a wooden plaque and hang on a wall. Being a huge animal lover, it feels so wrong even though they aren’t real 😉
Hanging pompoms and paper lanterns are a fun way to inject color, either clustered together or sprinkled throughout the room.
Instead of tucking hats away, why not embrace them and make them part of the decor.
To make a mural three dimensional, incorporate objects.
With a valance and curtains, you can make a secret vignette (or even a closet) for your child.
Install narrow shelves to display books, which engages your child by letting them see all the books instead of just the spines.
Painting furniture, like a room, is an easy and inexpensive transformation. Why not mix it up and gradate the colors? Take it a step further by painting the drawer sides, so that when a drawer is pulled out, the color is revealed.
Painting furniture breathes vitality, freshness and new life into old pieces. I didn’t paint my little girl’s furniture because it was my grandmother’s, so I wanted to leave it alone. But, if I had bought it, I may have painted it.
I’m happy that you all liked the checkerboard rug and I have extra pieces of the rug that I bought in case any of the squares got stained, which will help in showing how to do it for my post. I’m also digging up the supplies for the cornice boards. The pictures are going to slow the posts down a little, so I’m not quite sure when I’ll have them ready to go.
Also, if there is something in particular that you need inspiration for or are looking for, let me know and I will try to help. I never throw away a design magazine and have thousands of pictures on my computer!
I hope you all like these tidbits and that there is something that you may find useful. Have a great day 🙂
What great and adorable ideas. I feel like I could have done that before having kids, now that they suck all my energy I don’t know where I would find the patience! LOL
Lol!! I hear you!! You have SO much on your plate and three kids – isn’t one really young?
ya my youngest is almost 17 months, and 2 1/2 and almost 6.
Oh my!! I didn’t know all of them were so young! No wonder you are exhausted! Kids are tiring with all their energy and at that age, you have to be on top of them all the time!
Lovely pictures! Really great ideas!
Thank you!
What beautiful and adoarable ideas, The celing medallion and the chandelier and the butterflies. All of them are great.
Cynthia
Thanks!
Love the bed cupboard. 6-7 years ago, I could have done with an idea like that for my daughter 🙂
I have hundreds of pictures of nurseries now and I so wish I had had them years ago!
Love the bird cages and deer !!! Cute! Thank you to share!
So glad you like them!!
Some really cool ideas in here! The bird cages are just awesome. I think I want to do that in my dining room.
Oohh! What a great idea!!!
Love some of these ideas. Redesigning both my girls’ rooms this summer.
How fun!! I’m going to do another post on girls’ rooms (and also boys’ rooms). Is there anything in particular you want to see for inspiration?
Sweet! Color combinations would be cool. We’re playing around with the idea of blues right now. Thanks so much!
its all so adorable!

Great Ideas for Kids Rooms!
I loved the butterflies and cowboy room. Great ideas!!
So, so, so BEAUTIFUL! One is more charming and precious than the other. We adore how they’ve given antiqued furniture a fresh coat of paint and now it’s “Shabby Chic.”

Love the uses for the armoire!!!
So many great ideas, these are awesome. I especially like the workstation, art displays, sofa, and the book display is also amazing. I bookmarked this for later use. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastico! Ideas for kids room that rock!
Such great ideas! I’m forwarding this to my daughter for my granddaughter’s room!!
Brilliant with the old armoires!
Kearney — Thanks so much for stopping by ‘Brownies’ and liking my little post. 30 seconds into your site and I’ve already clicked the ‘follow’ button. You had me at ‘twinkle lights.’ Seriously 😉
I love “would you rather” questions! Lol on the twinkle lights! In my past posts, I’ve referred to myself as a “crow”, attracted to anything shiny, thus the lights had huge appeal…swap them out for twinkle lights and they become magical! I’m so glad you are following!
Oh, I am so easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, lol. I’m excited to be following you. From the looks of things, we have a similar aesthetic.
It sounds like it!! And things that interest us, like pondering questions!
Ha! Indeed 🙂
I love the butterfly collection and that it is done with paper punches. I have an idea for my daughters room and you really need to have a waiver or disclaimer 🙂
I love that too! Do you mean like an unauthorized use disclaimer? I do at the bottom because I did have a problem with with a couple of bloggers lifting my material and not giving me credit! I was ticked because it takes a long time to put them together. Should I move it to the top?
Yes right at the top! Protect what is yours. I was also thinking of a disclaimer of “I will not be held responsible if your Significant Other goes bat-excrement insane on a project and never finishes” (something like that)
I moved it after what you said!! One girl lifted my pictures AND words with no credit! Grrrr….
Is there way to watermark your photos (please ignore if you’ve already thought of that)
“Excrement” – lol! And any fights that ensue from said projects!
I do watermark them now. Just one more thing that makes it longer to do posts
But one blogger has also lifted parts of my posts with pictures that have taken me forever to find and my words with no credit. Who would have thought! I spend so much time on these posts!
That must be frustrating! Photos is one thing but what you actually write…Anger!
Ooh, I love those butterflies! Great collection of ideas.
Thanks! The butterflies are so happy looking!
Super….. use of closet space!
I love the bird cages! So lovely. Thanks for sharing.
I am completely overwhelmed and in love with all of them. But oh my how spectacular is that white tented bed?!!! and the pink chandelier!!!!!!!!!!!! And now I know exactly the way I need my books organized. Having ADD I need to be able to see everything. So I adore being able to see the entire book and not just the spine.
I found your delightful blog, and I am having tons of fun perusing through it! You and my husband have much in common with your terrific ideas. Our three boys are grown up and away now, but our youngest son, 19 months ago presented us with our first grandchild, a little girl named Zoë. You would never guess that I am smitten – especially if you have read any of my recent posts, which have been filled almost to overflowing with photos, stories and poems, all for and/or about Zoë! You room decorating ideas are wonderful, and I can see utilizing many of them in the future for her. Fortunately, her Mom is great decorator and has some good ideas, but I know she will enjoy looking at these!
I am especially thrilled with your idea about the used armoires. Definitely something that I will keep my eyes open for. Our current house is up for sale, and when we are able to sell it (we don’t have to and are in no hurry, just want to move closer to town), we are thinking of a smaller place to buy in addition to buying a second small home on the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina where our granddaughter lives. I have thought about creating an office space, and had looked at ready-made folding office closets. What a great idea to create your own out of a used entertainment case! That is definitely going to the top of my list – especially if we can get one for free!
I also had one concern. All I could imagine when I saw the chrome flowers by Chiasso attached over the cribs was a child, as soon as they could stand, reaching up and grabbing them – and either damaging the wall by pulling them off, or cutting themselves on them! But I am a worry-wart. I think they are great, but I would probably save them for an older child’s or an adult’s room.
Believe me when I say that I will be back frequently to check out your ideas here – so keep them coming! One thing I would suggest is that you keep your suggestions down to two or three per post – that way we would have time to really absorb them – but that is certainly not a criticism. It is a way, however, of saving you time and effort! Spread out your ideas over a week using a unifying theme. Whatever you do, just keep on doing it! A wonderful addition to my blog catalog! Thanks again – my blog is a writer’s blog, and quite eclectic, so it might not be to your taste – you are welcome and invited to visit any time.
We just had a daughter in March, but I’m digging the armoire for her room when she’s big enough.
These ideas are so fun I might have to have sire some more children
I love all of the cozy hide-aways you featured!
Love, love, love the narrow shelves for the books. Books are art so how appropriate to show them off as such. Great post!
Lots of great ideas! 🙂
I absolutely love these ideas!!! What is the link to your pinterest account? I’m sure I’d love that too! Thanks for the follow, look forward to your great posts!
So good to see someone with such passion for their work!! keep it up and although we have a more Lloyd-Wright style house it is ripe for internal work and some of your ideas esp around kids room/space are SO good. Well done!

I love decorating and design. When I own a house I’d like to think I’d be hardcore. This blog is my decorating porn, the last fe entries have been on kid’s room decor.
I loved all the ideas!! are just amazing!! I had to pintesrest almost every photograph 😀
Perfect timing with this entry! Getting ready for a move soon and just bought some paper lanterns for my daughter’s future room, but I think I need bigger ones after seeing your pics. Good stuff!
I have seen a lot of kids’ room ideas over the years, but these are the absolute best! Your decor and design blogs are the BEST, and it’s amazing how many things you come up with that are fresh and new when we think we have seen everything.
That is SO nice of you to say!!!! You always boost me up with such great words, and I’m so appreciative of that!! Thank you very, very much!!
Beautiful. I would love to take a piece here anda piece there. I too easily get overwhelmed by a ‘whole’ project.
OMG!! Amazing designs and ideas. Many of the ideas can fit adults room too. It widens one’s creativity and imagination. Can’t wait to try it in my room. I dono which one to take and which to leave….
The first two pictures are my best liked. I’m not a child and would really like to have a space like that to sleep in. Grown ups sleep in such boring places, the most exciting thing would be a head board. A home office in the closet, most wives would probably love that, they wouldn’t have to complain we don’t keep our offices cleaned up. They could just close the door. Or maybe if we wanted a few brownie points we could close the door for them. Thanks for sharing these with us.
Oh my goodness, I am in love with the first three ideas. Especially the first one. I don’t even care that it’s probably meant for about 7 year olds, I want to live in a little nook! Awesome post 🙂
Awesome ideas. I love them all! I really like the butterfly wall at the end
never mind using these ideas just for kids rooms – I can see these being put to use throughout my whole house!!!! gorgeous xXx
Love the birdcages, and the clipboards for kids’ art! Also would be great for the craft room, to post most recent designs and ideas!

If only my kids would keep their rooms this clean! I really like the bed nooks and the 3D art on the walls. We might be doing some decorating in the fall when it cools down, so it’ll be good to have some ideas.

so cute, so nice, so inspiring… love your cushions’ sofa and birdhouses in a kids room. just go on.
Thanks for finding all these beautiful ideas. I would love to try the butterflies – anything with paper! I also love that giant “B” initial. I made some wall initials (http://jewelsathome.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/lets-start-at-the-very-beginning/), but they look tiny next to that giant one. I might have to try a super-oversize one with a cool wrapping paper for the family room.
Those are amazing designs!
Thanks, Gail!!
Love all of the ideas for hanging kids’ art. Thanks for posting!
These are beautiful photos for inspiration. Wants me to start over with my daughter’s room. ha ha
I love the secret doors!
I can’t wait to own my own house so I can actually do some of this stuff! Someday….
I love the hidy holes. The kid in me wants one now! =)
These are such wonderful ideas! I especially love looking at ugly furniture on Craigsl ist and making it into something beautiful. Using moldings is a great idea. I’m inspired to do more DIY when I see your posts. I also like the paper 3D art 🙂 Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am at a color conference with two ladies from the DC area…. makes me wish I lived there again!
Lovely creative ideas! Loved them all, but especially the sweet dreams around the darling chandelier!
All really unique! I Love the cabinet!
Wow! So glad I checked out your Blog. Those Kids Rooms are amazing! Especially love the hide-away bed and desk. Great Post!
Who needs wallpaper with that wonderful narrow shelved book case. The way the books are stored it makes the area so bright and interesting, best of all it will change as the child’s book collection grows.
What a great idea for an old entertainment center. I was thinking you could probably turn a large one into a window seat. I will have to keep my eyes peeled now. 🙂
What beautiful ideas. I love them all.

Sometimes stars align, you want to know more about children’s safety…I can help you with that…now you can just keep giving me more great ideas like the ones here….I love anything that feels old, but functions like new! Atta girl painting it yourself! My son in law , a woodworking contractor is a master with all moldings, wish he could see your places take some detail pics!
I sent your blog to my husband because of all the good info – on SO many topics concerning children’s safety – and told him he had to read it! I’m so envious about your son-in-law…the projects that you could get help with!!!
Thank you…let me know if you all have contacts in education….trying to spread my message…like a safety missionary, one person at a time….there are schools adopting the book for every teacher here. Then they sell the book in the office for the parents.
they are all nice and cute!!! :))
You have some really great ideas and inspirations. Thank you!
great ideas! love the narrow shelves for books -my little guy is an avid ‘reader’…

What wonderful ideas! I am IN LOVE with that picture book display wall. Great post!!
Thank you so much! I think children like to see their books, rather than the spines, especially when they are young 🙂
I am SO happy you visited my blog and as a result I have found some brilliant solutions to the artwork display challenge i have in my sons room! I love the clipboards on the wall, and the magnetic strip and the clothes line. Love the cool 3d wall art wending across and up the rooms so stylishly too. LOADS of fab ideas!
Oh good!! Your post was something I really related to, so it was refreshing to find someone blogging about it!
doing each other a good service then :-). If I manage to find any revelationary strategies, I’ll blog about it to let you know!
These DIY projects are so wonderful. Since my daughter is getting older I have been thinking about switching up her room. These have really inspired ideas of what I could do to spruce it up. Thanks!
I’m so glad! Now, if only I could get inspired to do some sprucing up of my own 😉

Great ideas from A Detailed House.
These are the most creative kid’s room ideas I’ve ever seen! I wish I could incorporate every last one of them! I wonder if the chalkboard wall idea would work in one of the large wainscoting squares? Hmmmm…
I’m definitely going to do the Sweet Dreams around my son’s chandelier. In a navy blue probably to coordinate with his nautical theme… so I’ll probably need to go ahead and spray paint the black chandelier navy. Thank you so much my wheels are now officially turning. 🙂
Oh yay!!! I’m so glad you like them 🙂 I love the idea of painting wainscoting squares with chalk paint! Kids’ rooms are SO fun!!! I would love to see pics of the ceiling medallion when you do it!!
My husband and I are going through the process to become foster parents, which may mean we need to redo the room regularly if the children are with us for just a short time. There are so many wonderful ideas here and in your blog, and I will definitely be using you as inspiration to make the room special for each child. Thank you! x
So excited about the armoires. You are amazing
I was trying to pick out my favorite look in this post but I love them all, especially the little girls rooms. I am always looking for unique ways to display my daughter’s finger paintings. I like the idea of clip boards or clothes hangers. Cool stuff. More things for me to daydream about our house.
