It’s been 14 years since I designed my house and I’ve found my taste has morphed through the years. I find myself now more interested in kitchens that span many different styles instead of locking myself steadfastly into one.
But one thing I have always been drawn to: a kitchen with light cabinets. With two young ones and four dogs, this is a never-ending battle in keeping them clean. Did I mention we live on the Potomac river and the dogs love to go swimming?
Pictures are so exciting to me – I find myself not necessarily buying into the whole design concept sometimes, but picking and choosing different things that inspire me. Maybe you will too. Take a look:
The transom grilles on this house are so appealing and how the drapery rod is curved to accept the drapes is genius. How the sparkle of the metal in of the range hood correspond with the drawer pulls, lighting, faucet and accessories is luxurious.
A clean, white kitchen, with a surprisingly ingenuous use of the fridge front panel – a chalk board! This doesn’t have to be permanent if the thought scares you of always having a chalkboard.
I adore the chairs!! White chairs in a kitchen?? Most likely these are upholstered in vinyl. Just love it!
The top cabinets that I wanted for my kitchen!
The light fixtures are so unique…
With the combination of the ceiling and island light fixtures, the kitchen holds a slight nautical feel…
Metal drum light fixtures add a sparkle that all rooms need…
A take on a vacation home kitchen.
Note the mirrored cabinet fronts above the ovens…
I adore the architecture of this kitchen ceiling and would love to see what the home looks like in full! Besides the amazing structure, so many things are done right in this kitchen, as it compliments the architecture, seems cohesive, almost original – but not really. The range hood is a perfect example (and an example of design in general) – it mirrors the ceiling shape! With so many windows, there was a need for storage, thus the large island, a stand alone piece of furniture, which is another nod to this historic building.

Amazing! I am with you about the chairs on the 3rd photo!
What a wonderful blog, totally inspiring!
Thank you so much, Yvonne! I am deeply appreciative of the words of encouragement as I’m very new at this and feeling my way through slowly!
I love art, which is how I found your blog… I will be following your adventures!
The burl wood used to create the island (second to the last) picture; is amazing, I love that whole kitchen.
I too change my home as I change my taste.
I enjoyed your blog.
Jess
Thank you, Jess! I love your pics and noticed your barn – we used to have one on our property until a snow storm – actually the weight of the snow – took it down 😦 Luckily, we still have 2 old silos on our property!
Thank you for visiting!!
Your blog is lovely. And I love white as the base color, in a room. It really lets the colors and textures of the contents shine.
I love all the photos on your blog. Are you on Pinterest?
Hello! You must read my mind! They accepted my request but I have stalled because it says you agree to your FaceBook account reverting to the timeline and I have been stalling on that!
Your post on the “Coffee table that inexperience built” was really great! I, unfortunately, don’t have any extra Home Depot gift certificates 😉
I love kitchens too…when I first started drawing again, so many of my drawings were of the details in my kitchen. I love the top cabinets you pointed out as well and those chairs made me hear choirs of angels sing! I actually have cream coloured chairs in my dining room with dark cherry wood, but there are two covered chairs for my two kids! Lovely blog and I will join your other followers from here! looking forward to seeing more!
Gorg, gorg, gorgeous! I really like your beautiful and inspiring blog! Best, Stephanie
While white is not my color of choice (in any room…I am reds and blues and greens), I can pick out a design element from each of these kitchens. I adore those star lights! And the flared backer for the stove in the vacation home picture is wonderful.
I like the montage. You will do well on Pinterest promoting your blog.
Red,
Since you mentioned that you liked kitchens with reds, blues and greens, I decided to post about it!! So the post, “You Asked for It: Kitchens with Color” is for you!
I’m so glad you liked the pictures and get the idea of picking out design elements!! The kitchens are crazy expensive, but they accessories, paint colors and details that are accessible to most and those can really make a difference!
I will have to explore how to promote my blog using Pinterest, because I don’t know how to (promote that is, I’m familiar with Pinterest and already have an account). I would want people to visit my blog and if they saw all the pictures on Pinterest, they may not bother 😦
Anyway, thanks for commenting and the input!! It’s very helpful!!
You need to check into my new Friday Series on how to promote. It uses the example of books, but I will venture into blogs, photography and other entities as we go along. The first segment is tomorrow!
Red.
I like the layout and design of your blog i wish i could ………..
Hi Kearney.
Like you, my dream kitchen has huge windows, lots of architectural detail and celebrates white. I especially love dark wood floors and splashes of yellow and green bouquets for effect. If I woke up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the kitchen in photo #7 I would think I had died and gone to heaven.
Beautiful montage – thanks for sharing. Keep in touch.

love the grey kitchen with the metal drum light!
You have quite an interesting site as for the kitchens here I can dream 🙂
You have a gorgeous home:)
I love a white kitchen! This is a beautiful compilation of images.
Sigh. Oh, how I love white kitchens. My kitchen is white cabinets with barely beige walls and 1970’s Autumn Gold counters. We couldn’t afford to replace the counters when we moved in, so just worked around them to build the color scheme for the kitchen. I love the chalkboard, but couldn’t talk The Man into a permanent chalk board in the kitchen. I have a long skinny cheap frame that is getting the chalkboard treatment this weekend. 🙂
Such uplifting photos. Do people really have kitchens like that?
Love these kitchens (i just Pinned a couple of them 🙂 ) Thanks!
It’s like a paradise of kitchens!!
I’m I in Never Never Land?
if I am don’t take me back to reality.
Thanks for the fantasy break!
Quiet …… I’m in The Gone with the Wind Kitchen and I cannot be disturded…….
It’s my mental spa day……

I am DYING for a white kitchen, your pictures are very inspirational! Once our basement is finished a white kitchen is definitely next on my list. You have great taste!
Wow, every single one of those pictures is seriously beautiful… thanks for sharing.
Hi
I love your kitchen post and the title of your blog. I’m so glad you stopped by mine because I love design, details and home decor. I look forward to your posts. I also “pinned” a couple of your kitchens.
Hey I have white in my kitchen too….I am here in AZ and very few people do….they have dark Tucson….so I am delighted to see the kitchen pics that you have here on your site…lovely…..
Loved all of the pics! Especially the one with all of the greenery included in the decor!
I love all of these island ideas. I’ve been dreaming of a remodel and been a little lost on what to do with the island. Thanks for the inspiration!
I’m a white fanatic. Beautiful collection.
I so need a kitchen re-do. Picture a vintage 70s brown sink, white Formica countertops specked with gold, cabinets that are yellowing with age, linoleum that needs replacing, a whole in the wall where a chimney was removed… It is truly awful.
How does one even begin to decide and to make changes on a tight budget?
I love the idea of wainscoting (is that what it is?) on the ceiling. And the top cabinets with the peek of glass are beautiful.
Hi! Even on a tight budget, it is completely doable!!
I’m assuming you’re based in Minnesota, so I looked up the all the ReStores of Habitat for Humanity: http://www.hfhmn.org/restores.html They sell builders’ extras for SO much less. You can get everything, even wainscoting and hardwood flooring (I think that’s what was on the ceiling) from there, including the kitchen sink from them. You could also see if there are other builder resell places in your area.
BUT, you don’t have buy everything. Let’s just talk about what you can do with the most minimal amount of money.
The cabinets can be striped by sanding them down, primed, sand them again in case the grain rises, then paint 2 coats. You can cut into your upper cabinets with a jigsaw if you want glass-front cabinets. Order glass cut to the correct size, then add molding strips to keep the glass in.
The hole in the wall, you could make into a tall pantry cupboard. I’m assuming they kicked the chimney out to the studs. It would just be a matter of getting some plywood (1/2″-3/4″ thick) and nailing it into the studs in a nice box shape. Mark where you would want shelves, then nail in 2″ lengths to hold up the weight of a shelf, then prime, sand, paint, then insert painted shelves.
For the floor, it depends what’s underneath. Also look at ALL the ReStore stores and you also might have to wait for something good to come in, but I looked at a few and they had boxes of floor tiles!
The countertop, you can make your own butcher block out of 2×4. You glue them together into “Sheets” of wood, then cut them to the size of your counter top (use your old countertop as a template), then oil, oil, oil!!!
I hope this helps?? Feel free to ask more questions or if I’m not covering what you want!
Hi, even with a tight budget loads can be done. I’ve remodelled my kitchen – there was some original stuff from 1940 I kept, but all that 70′ & 80′ “nice” vinyl and walls painted with oil paints are gone now. I did a lot for work myself – from re-plastering walls (simplest really, just had to read manual on the box 🙂 and google a bit 🙂 ) to painting them and cutting new wooden tops to size. Tops were bought as a ready, but uncut to size panel. For the floor – I agree with ADetailedHouse. It depends from what vinyl covers. If there’s solid wooden floor, it’s a bingo:). Sometimes you can buy new tiles with huge discount, because shop has, say, only 4 m2 left and they want to get rid of them. Maybe making a mosaic is worth thinking of?
OMG – That’s a smart idea!! On the floor if a company only has a few boxes of a cream tile and a few boxes of another, do a checkerboard, which is my favorite!! Pulling up the vinyl will be a pain, but it’s going to have to be done regardless what you do. You can also do resin countertops – or if you are really daring – you can do concrete countertops. Super cheap, tons of tutorials online, even Youtube. I have a post almost finished on easy DIY’s and because there have been a few questions about the redoing of kitchens, I might do a post, esp. with the countertops. The resin with broken glass in it (sounds awful, but super pretty) is one that needs a picture.
amraart – Totally respect you for doing the work and thinking out of the box!
I really enjoyed reading this post. It gives me great inspiration for my future kitchen! Thanks!
OK, these kitchens are amazing. In our dreams we would wish for such beautiful kitchens, of course a full household staff would have to come along also. One can dream though. Thanks for sharing your insights and “eye” on things.
Amazing and gorgeous kitchens I might be willing to die for … but with all those dogs, how can you keep them clean? We’ve got three and just keeping up with the leaves and mud and stuff is almost impossible!
We are starting to design a new kitchen in our home. Our 70’s designed kitchen has become small and cramped. Thank you for such beautiful expamples of kitchens done right. My favorite is #7.
Thank you for stopping by The Rescued Home. I love all these kitchens! That is one projects we haven’t knocked out yet but looking at these pictures is inspiring me to pick up a hammer. I love the kitchen with the star pendants. Take care. -Lauren
I love, love a bright, white, cheery kitchen. My previous house had one I designed and remodeled. Simply loved it. The current house came with black appliances and dark wood cabinets. Believe it or not, but the black appliances always seem to look dirty, showing every last speck of dust or grime. White was easier to keep looking sparkling clean. Hands down.
(Thanks for the like – was nice to explore your projects.) The first thing I tackled at the current house was solar panels and solar-tubes bringing in much needed sunshine.
Those are some lovely photos. All gorgeous kitchens, and definitely inspiring! 🙂
We had our kitchen cabinets done last year and more to come…thank you sharing these photos and giving us some new ideas for lighting. Jay
Love Traditional Home Mag! I for one def appreciate your post..looking forward to more 🙂
Ahh! I’m obsessed with all decor white/offwhite, so I loved this post. Great inspiration for a kitchen! I yearn for the day I have a home of my own.
Beautiful… would love to have a white kitchen!
I was an editor at a decorating magazine for 11 years and have seen TONS of kitchens. A white kitchen is still my fave, though I’m also partial to a colourful retro one!
These kitchens are seriously making me drool! Had to look at them again, this time with a napkin! 🙂
So funny!! It’s kitchen porn and I look at it often! Thank you for reading it!
Your blog is spectacular and your taste is too! Bravo! Leni
This is a terrific blog–I will be checking back for more inspiration.
Beautiful! I’ll be buying a home and renovating it soon so these ideas will definitely come in handy! =)
Thank you for the like! This is a great post – the first kitchen and the second to the last one (dark range hood, large multi-doored island?! LOVE IT!) are my favorites. I must, must, must have the ability to change and the look of both of those kitchens seem easily adjustable…plus there isn’t one particular theme they’re strictly adhering to. Ahh, to dream… 🙂
You have some dynamite kitchens here. Very nice.
good posts. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for visiting my blog.
Love the kitchens and agree that the 6th one down does have a nautical touch to it. It’s my favorite.
The second photo is a DREAM kitchen! So cozy! Very nice blog!
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! love it!! lol
i’m PINing them!! i LOVE decorating, just not enough money or space but I love the ideas you have here!! i’ll be following you missy:)
Reblogged this on purpleplusdesigns.
Love the white cabinets, but alas, hubby wants natural wood in our new home! Probably best with 4 sticky kids, but white is still so beautiful. Thanks for the inspirations.
I like your images and have signed up to your blogg.
now if I just had a zillion dollars…..
Hi, I think these are great pictures, you definitely have a flare for the beautiful styles.
I love white kitchens too! I was set on white cabinets for our tiny 47 square foot galley kitchen, but compromised with my husband on brown. I should thank him for battling me on it because you are right, animals and dogs don’t make for an easily clean white anything, especially a kitchen which has lots of foot traffic. Maybe in my next kitchen when my kiddos are older I’ll splurge on a white kitchen…
I’m drooling over these kitchens. Great post.
Beautiful! We appreciate stylish kitchens.

What a gorgeous collection of pictures! I’ve always loved bright, white, light-filled kitchens. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

These kitchens are about the size of my entire home! I find it very frustrating that guides to small kitchens always show rooms that are much much bigger than my
little galley space. I do
I do
I do like white and pale kitchens best.
Yes, these definitely aren’t guides for small kitchens and, in some cases, are in showrooms for cabinet manufacturers, so they have an inordinate amount of space that is simply unrealistic for homeowners.
I put these together for people to draw inspiration from and to show colors, details, accessories, architectural elements, styles, etc. to emulate.
There was one small kitchen that I adored in cream that was SO elegant (probably a small flat in London or somewhere) that even made use of an unusable fireplace. I think that you are right and I will try do a post entirely devoted to small kitchens and start searching for beautiful kitchens in smaller spaces. I am almost finished with a post that addresses space saving solutions, but am still researching, because frankly, who wants to read about the same boring solutions!! I’m trying to find *new* ones!
Thank you for reading and I hope I can address the small kitchen soon!
I tried liking this, but for some reason it wouldn’t take. So, consider yourself Liked!
WOW! These kitchens are incredible! I need to show my wife your blog so she can see these amazing kitchens, especially the one with the transom grilles! THank you for looking at my blog and I thought to meander through and take a peek here! Fantastic! Really enjoying!
As we say in Hawaiian, Maika’i!
I love the chairs in the kitchen. Luxury! I could sit at that table LONG after supper was over. Great post!
I adore white kitchens! So bright and cheery… You should follow my Pinboard called “dream house”, or my houzz idea book with the same name. FULL of white kitchens! 🙂
Love the vacation home kitchen. Who am I kidding? I love them all. Very nice site.
FABULOUS post. New to your blog & loving what I have read so far 🙂
Wow! What stunning kitchens!! Makes me really envious!I will keep an eye in here (and try not to get toooooo depressed!)
White is inspiring indeed. People you are right, this post is very inspiring.
The thing we must consider is that WHITE is COLORLESS… it is the absence of color. I used it in every concept that I have done and I had to fight hard to explain its application. Well used WHITE will absorb, transmit or reflect light, emphazing at the same time a color, a wood essence, a wood grain, a material or a feature, just to name a few. It can also be used to EXPRESS something MISSING but will surely ask some maintenance discipline.
One last thing, guys… kitchen and rollerblades are two thing completely different. White will increase the size of your kitchen and your island might just looks like a real island…
I love using white but what I have learned is this: With WHITEs, size really matterS.
Pictures are great… Love the ideas and concepts. Great blog
~anna
I love white/cream kitchens too! I spend hours dreaming and saving ideas for my one day remodel! Great post!
I love the kitchens you’ve featured and with so many homes following an open plan it’s important that our kitchens be well appointed. We are lucky that there are so many different looks to choose from.
Love, love, love the pics you chose of inspirational white kitchen cabinets. Now I’ve got kitchen envy….
Beautiful kitchens!!! I’ll be pinning a ton of these on Pinterest. lol
Love each and every one of these kitchens. The last chandelier is awesome!
Love the post! You’ve been pinned!
Wow, these are amazing spaces! You can’t imagine the chaos where I live…lego everywhere, old goldfish rubbed into the carpet. It’s nice to look at some pristine kitchens and dream about…order.
Some of those kitchens have wine in them, and I like that too.
WOW, breathtaking. It must of taken a long time to do all that detailed work. Beautiful. 🙂
Daniel
Stunning. They bring me in, make me want to curl up with tea and just enjoy the beauty. So glad I found your blog.
I’ve sent your blog to my sister, she will LOVE your blog, she’s house nut! Beautiful pictures.
What amazingly beautiful kitchens! I am in the process of choosing a kitchen for our new stone house in Tuscany. It is not easy.
What a lucky lady you are. I live with rescued cats…which drive me crazy most of the time, and when I can I take a neighbour’s dog walkies! I love dogs, grew up with them and miss the company but, no space for a dog on a balcony.
I live in an old house – emphasis on old but not pretty old, just kinda crumbly old and I only rent it. I have longed all my life here to have a quiet place with a garden but I live on a busy city street. I escape my confines by writing. And as for little girls, I have two pretty granddaughters. I like your writing, but architecture for me remains at a distance. There are some marvellous old houses here in Nicosia and I love to look at them and wonder what stories lie behind those walls. Thank you for sharing your life with me.
Colette
I like your choices of images a lot. Keep up the good work.
Loved this collection of great kitchen photos. I have started on the design process of our new home, and have quite a collection of kitchens myself. Most are very similar to what you have collected, and even a couple of the same ones.
To the reader earlier, Minnesota Prairie Works, the ceiling is most likely a tongue and grove product, you could easily use discarded or even mismatched old wood flooring if you are going to paint it. Be sure to prime it correctly or try Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Thanks for stopping by to see me too, Kearney. NIce to know someone is watching.
🙂
Great selection of inspiring photos! Who doesn’t love a white kitchen. 🙂
I love the designs very nice. I have a little bit of designer in me too haha. I also like the way you have your blog set up nicely done!

Such a pretty collection of images!

So much thought has gone into these kitchens and their accessories. They are inspiring as well as elegant and calm.
What a beautiful collection of kitchens. Thanks for putting it all together so that we all have lots of inspiration all in one place…
Awesome post! I love thinking about the best design for a kitchen, especially in a small house. Clearly these kitchens aren’t cramped, but the white really makes them look expansive and clean.
Love your blog, the pictures are stunning. Can’t wait to read more.
Sandy and Denise
This post really, really makes me want to re-do my kitchen – which it just so happens to be in desperate need of!
My previous kitchen was all white. I found it incredibly easy to keep clean. It was similar to the one with the comment chalk board. I liked it alot but this time out I’m going for eggshell blue. TFS
I have a white kitchen but these are so pretty and unique…love parts of all these pictures.
I absolutely love that third one. I could look at that all day.
Thanks for the inspiration Kearney! Love your passion for design.
What a stunning collection of kitchen photography. We share the same taste, they were all beautiful! Keep up the good work!
What a beautiful kitchen. I love the jars on the counter, I need something like that.
The lghts in the 5th pictures. To die for.
Gorgeous photos. Love the topiaries in front of the bay window. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome back, and I hope you have some time to rest too.
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering
what all is needed to get set up? I’m assuming
having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% positive. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly
appreciated. Appreciate it
