Good news and bad news. Good news is I have a new favorite paint color: a pinkish peach. It is delish. The bad news? I was looking for a cool color! I realized I have a lot of warm colors in our house, so I think I need to change a room or two on our first floor.
But peach…it’s just scrumptious! On Friday, I did a post on part of interior designer Kelee Kadillac’s apartment, but only showed you a portion of her apartment because it was quite a bit to take in. Here is the rest, starting with her yummy dining room:
Orange and pink is a “hot” color combination right now.
The House Beautiful’s pic looks more pink.
But here (from the designer’s website) the room looks more peachy…
Under the chair rail, a quatrefoil pattern has been used. It may be fabric, seeing how many of the walls have been upholstered, but it could be wallpaper. A less expensive alternative? A stencil. There are spectacular ones available online too – ones that are very unique and can be used to repeat the pattern on a rug, shower curtain, piece of furniture, lamp shade, throw pillow, etc.
Mixing and matching the colors with the table settings and a close-up view of the table, which is rustic, and something that could be acquired on the cheap, yet is here in what is considered an “upscale” room. It shows that with careful thought, studying a room and planning, you can recreate a inexpensively.
One place to look is estate sales, where china and crystal (cut crystal, which is more valuable and reflective – not pressed crystal with the dull edges that even Waterford does today to reap the most profit…they even closed their Waterford factory in 2009 and outsourced it!!!) is usually being unloaded as formal dining has fallen by the wayside. Gorgeous pieces of furniture can be acquired there too, but the good estate sales will be staked out by antique dealers looking to snipe the best pieces…and they get there early! Warning: it could take time and patience, though, to score some of the items for your room, but isn’t it worth it??
Oh, my…you’ve seen my dining room, which is a burnt sienna color. Now, I’m wondering if I could pull off this color in the room. I’ll have to take a look at the rug and the accessories I have.
The drapes look very full and the rods, which do not go the length of the window, are hung from the ceiling.
A better look at the quatrefoil pattern…
Little silhouettes in little frames tied to the shutter knobs.
The detailing on the drapes is subtle, which makes it that much more appealing. And I think this is the same armoire that was painted grey in the House Beautiful photo shoot of her living room from my prior post.
Huh. I don’t know what I think of matching the picture mats to the wall color…maybe it’s this wall color, or I’d need to see it in person, or it seems too matchy? I don’t know…it’s a neat idea though. Maybe if she’d done it a shade lighter or darker?
The elephant pillow is adorable! And that is a small bed for two people! They must not have dogs! Oh, or kids!!
Greek key frieze on either side of the panel.
Neoclassical design.
Pretty, what look to be antique (or very good reproductions) sconces.
A crystal empire chandelier and more shutters, more inspiration for me
There are a lot of sconces in this room…
and too many a lot of pictures….and accessories. I mean, one should be able to put their feet up on an ottoman
No shutters, but a spectacular fabric fashioned into a shade from which where she pulled her colors. The chest, the chair and the table look like they could have been found or acquired randomly (flea market, Craigslist, etc.) as none of it goes together – it’s just a hodgepodge of styles – but with the right layout, it can work. Just remember to try to keep the other “noise” to a minimum with competing styles.
I started off my post with “good news/bad news”, which reminds me of my brother, the City Mouse and a little funny I’d like to share with you. A few years ago, he brought his citified (rescue) dog with him while visiting me. My brother just let him out, figuring it would be fun for him to romp in our yard for a bit. After a ten minutes or so, I called his dog to bring him in.
That’s when I went to get my brother and asked him, “Do you want good news or bad news” He opted for the bad news first.
I said, “Your dog rolled in deer poop.”
City mouse said, “Well, what’s the good news?”
I said, “The good news is: it’s not my dog!” Then, I laughed my head off…Even he had to laugh
Let’s hope you have a better day than City Mouse did that day

Poor city mouse having to travel back in the car with the deer poo!
Loving the knife pleat ruffle detail on those luscious drapes! Using individual drapery hardware for stationary panels is very trendy right now, and is often a les expensive alternative to one big rod. Soooo love the Roman shade fabric in the bedroom. And I agree- the matching matts are creative, but not really my thing.
The pink is a bit unexpected, not sure if I love it.The orange accents are beautiful, and always make me hungry. My favorite colour is Orangerie from F&B, with warm light it is intoxicating.
Not sure I love those colors.
And totally agree with the ottoman comment, it should be clear to put your feet up…except if it’s filled with folded laundry (which could be a design statement, right??).
agree with you about the picture mounts, might work in a darker or lighter shade…. but definitely not the same colour, the orange and pinks are super! lovely warm colours, blue is a very difficult colour to work with, here it is ok, but getting the right shade…. to escape the coldness of the colour, not an easy task
ugh! I’m liking this pink peach color, but not sure it would look good in my house full of boys!
Not AFRAID of Color – thanks for sharing! happy Monday:)
I get the feeling I am going to learn a lot form this fabulous blog. I just signed up to follow by email…
Trying to decide on a dining room color myself & peach/coral is one of my favorites. It would probably be a tough sell for my husband by I figure if I just do it, then “oh well”. I have to be careful because I always tend to go crazy when I fall in love w/a color – right now the master bath is a peach/persimmon & teal & I might have a little bit of peach in one of the bedrooms.
Great dog story although deer poop – not so bad. Lola once rolled in raccoon poop – now that will (and did) bring a tear to your eye! She couldn’t even stand her own smell which makes me wonder why she thought it was such a great idea in the first place.
Hahaha!! I don’t know that I have ever had the pleasure of smelling raccoon poop, but I can’t differentiate between the poos as my sniffer isn’t as advanced as yours
I never knew how terrible and persistent a skunking was until my husband let one of our dogs into our house after being sprayed, who then ran upstairs and jumped into our bed…ugh!!! How he let that dog past him, I will never know! Your dog Lola sounds like such a ham!
If your husband doesn’t do the painting (like mine) OR if you think it will be a tough sell, I agree, just do it
I never consult, I just do, but he has never not liked anything I have done. And there’s that saying, “Real men wear pink”, so real men can exist in peach
I am STILL thinking about those darn things on the wall of your daughter’s apartment – it is just so bizarre! I wonder how long they have been there!
I can’t take credit for nailing the exact perfume, that was my groomer who I’m sure has run into them all including skunk. Only thing I can think of is your dog was probably racing past your husband trying to get away from the stink as fast as possible – just like with thunder, I think they figure they can outrun it. One of the most disgusting things Lola did was roll around in a family of slugs, came inside & shook a bunch of them all over the walls. Yuck yuck yuck! And once they started drying out, they were like Gorilla Glue in her hair. Groomer loved that.
It’s much too painful to watch my husband with a paint brush. The setup alone makes me crazy.
Kitchen update: I got a plan from the kitchen guy who came out to the house & am liking him less. We went to his showroom Sat. & I just felt he was trying to impress my husband with gimmicky things & not getting down to what he had for styles in cabinets. Get this – he was so excited about this deep sink which had a pile of wire grids in it. He was trying to tell me that it saved water if you just had a few dishes – you would wash them on the highest grid. Well wouldn’t the water go through those grids & have to come up to the highest level – thus using more water? So I said, what do you do with the grids? Oh, store them under the sink (not that I’d have anything else to put under there besides a bunch of grids). Then I asked who was going to clean the grids – because I’m sure not adding that onto my ‘to do’ list! He claimed that I was the only person to ask that question which I took as “you must be stupid lady”. But stuff like that & trying to steer me to cherry cabinets – I know I want off white glazed with a tinge of very dark brown or black & the island in the brown or black. Seemed like he kept pushing his tastes & preferences on me – didn’t like that.
I’m thinking those knobs in the apartment might have had something to do with keeping appliances or furniture from bumping against the wall. From the layers of paint on them I’d say they’ve been there since the house was built.
GRRR – with these kitchen people! I wish I was there to help you! I dealt with all the tradespeople at our house and they spoke looking at my husband, who couldn’t answer one question about anything when it comes to the layout/design of the house, like I’m a moron!! I had to tell them, “Eyes over here buddy!” I’ve dealt with a lot of pushy sales people trying to tell me what they thought I should do. I told them unless they were paying, they could keep they’re design opinions to themselves because I knew exactly what I wanted
Maybe try that? It’s uncomfortable, but so is having your time wasted!
Ah, I learned years ago when I was a buyer for a local chain around Boston to be wary of salesmen who want to become my new best friend. Every time this guy started pandering to my husband I decided to go the passive aggressive route of wandering away to look at the cabinet inventory. Really do I want to be talking about sinks & self closing hinges before I’ve decided they even sell the style of cabinet I want? I think he finally caught on though when he ‘lost’ half his audience. We spent 3 hrs there & never got to the part where I could envision any of his styles fitting the look that I wanted. I want more of a furniture look to the island & he was adamant about people getting up from the island & hitting their legs on the legs. He finally rummaged around in a closet to show me that he could possibly give me a couple of legs on an island …but he personally didn’t like that at all. As if I’d be inviting him over for coffee!
