Clive Christian is a fabulous cabinet manufacturer – a very, very high-end cabinet manufacturer that focuses on details like no other. Their millwork is so impeccable that their cabinets with the Edwardian style and the preponderance of moldings transcend kitchens and enter the realm of libraries, bathrooms and closets.
Since I didn’t want to drop $250,000 just for cabinets in my kitchen, I studied one of their designs, picked it apart and based my kitchen upon it.
This was my inspiration. Rod Stewart dropped the money this kitchen.
Their kitchens are wildly appealing to me because they look like what you would find in a hundred-year-old manor house, with minor tweets made and appliances inserted into fireplaces to convert the room into a kitchen.
While they look brilliant, they frequently opt for finishes that aren’t the most practical or well-wearing for a normal family. A white marble countertop looks great…but how long will that hold up in the real world. Since their target market is the very wealthy, it just may not be an issue because with the first few stains, maybe they would replace the porous marble countertops and have full-time help that wipes away every little smudge that hits those finishes.
You can take plain cabinets and a kitchen devoid of architectural details and add them. It equals serious equity. I did a post on adding molding to the top and bottom of my cabinets, Taking Plain, Stock Kitchen Cabinets and Making Them Look Custom…and Expensive, and of adding crown molding to our kitchens, Ordinary to Extraordinary with the Crown Jewel – Molding.
Maybe there will be some inspiration in these pictures for you…

My mantra at this point in our renovation: everything is better with crown molding.
I could NOT agree more!!!!
Yes! May I reblog!?
Could you post on your Facebook wall first and then on your professional blog? When you post on your blog first, it then disperses it to other venues, wiping out me as the author, but more importantly for you, it wipes out the preview pics, which is why you get no hits on it…
Ah…I did not realize this! I would definitely want to make sure you got the credit. I believe I am addicted to your posts. We obviously share a passion.
I think we do! Yes, any reblogged post that gets redistributed doesn’t credit the original author to the audience, which is why it’s so controversial :-/ it credits the blog that reblogged it….
That’s very good to know.
My husband works for a company that builds custom cabinets that we could never afford! Seriously, their cabinets in my kitchen would cost as much as my house did when it was new. That being said, we do have some of their stuff in our house, pieces that were *rejected* that we got for a song; and a huge entertainment wall unit (8×20) that a homeowner decided he *didn’t like* after he purchased the home. We got it for FREE…….and just had to pay one of the installers to make it fit into our house.
So, my kitchen still has it’s stock cherry fake wood cabinets……lol…..but I’ve upgraded everything else around them to make it look better.
I normally don’t pitch my own blog, but here’s the link with photos that show the project. In one, you can see the entertainment center in the living room.

I’m all for saving money while still getting the look I want!

I love deals like that!!! Great, great job, Debi!!!
$250,000??? A lot of money!
I know, right!?!?! It’s crazy!
Just gorgeous, of course! You make an excellent point about the finishes, though. My french white cabinets (much, much lower end than these!) are magnets for 10-year-old hand prints, smudges, smears, etc. Keeping them looking nice could be a full-time job. Ha, ha. I was GOING to say that it IS a full-time job, but one that I don’t do very religiously.
Add 3 dogs that like swimming in the river, then coming back in …and shaking off! UGH!!!! Mud everywhere. What.was.I.thinking!
So lovely! sigh
These are just beautiful pictures and kitchens. I would take any one of them. I love all the bling with the chandeliers.

I really wish I had another kitchen to do!!
How many times can I press “like”? How about love. Thank you for this, exactly what I need when we sit down with the cabinet people.
You’re right about them looking like they’re from old manor houses – matter of fact they reminded me of the kitchens in the old Newport Mansions. Of course most of those were in the basements with dumb watiers. I love wandering through those houses, especially the Breakers.
Ha ha! I actually did this post with your kitchen in mind! I had a different post all set to go on artwork, but then remembered I had a whole file on Clive!
I just love the details and, if you can find one you like, just copy the face, the color, the shelving, drawers, etc and leave room to add fluting in-between shelving/cabinets and molding. I’d shop for unusual faucets, but online, or you can special order a lot from Home Depot’s Special Services Desk and get great prices on stuff they don’t carry in stores. I think I think about your kitchen too much!
Oh you’re a gem. I wondered if you might have that in mind & I love so many of the details & features in each of these – it’s just the look I’m hoping for. You know what’s funny about this process though is that I actually feel relieved to not be able to get this done before Christmas. I have the luxury of really looking at all the different options without the pressure. When we built this house of course the builder wanted to turn his investment around & I always felt under the gun to really study the plans or shop around for the allowances. There aren’t a lot of things that I would change, but it seems like after living here that we still lament not changing some things. So please know that I appreciate all your feedback & I’ve already printed out the pictures.
I love your suggestion about unique faucets & I’ve heard that there’s an on-line store that has very good deals. I need to do some exploring on that.
You think about my kitchen? I lost 2 nights of sleep after talking to the last guy who was here.
It’s SO much better to have more time!! And I do think about your kitchen because I got invested when I did the island post and I’m excited that you’re doing the whole thing!! I’d LOVE to do a kitchen!! They’ve come so far from when I did mine! I have so many more pictures! I try to mix up my posts, but I really just want to do kitchens, molding, tile and faucets! Hahaha! Take your time and stick to your guns
I’m here for you if you need anything
Thank you – I wish you lived up here. I love what you do with molding & I want a real ‘wow’ for the wall behind the stove. Plus, this time I’m going to pay a lot more attention to things like drawer pulls. I’m still waiting for the guy who came out here to measure to get back to me, but frankly as I look at the catalogs of the cabinets he sells, I’m just not seeing it. Guess I’m still hung up on my meeting with the decorator (still in the running) I met with at her studio. Just walking in I saw a lot of the same types of ideas that you seem to like on your post. She even had used an antique chest for a powder room sink – drawers cuts away, etc. She’s expensive, but has so much style.
I love looking at kitchens and drooling!
Me too!
The worst thing about marble tops is that if a glass topples over it smashes, whereas other surfaces you can just pick it up!
